What gets you through the day?

After going through a relatively trying day yesterday, I felt my defenses collapse. It wasn’t the usual, whining for time to pass, I actually felt depressed by my helplessness. I pondered every moment that passed, I wondered if I’d make it through to see the next. It was one thing after another. It felt like being in a tennis match I didn’t want to play.

On the walk home from work, I felt the day come to a close. I remember it being a very specific moment in time that had finally ended. I could feel all the pressures relieving.

It made me realize that there are some days that you just have to get through. They don’t mean much in the grand scheme of time, and yet they are significant. They are moments that carve a small scar into the body of your life story - however minimal, still managing to become part of your character. These days where the whole point of it is that you survived it.

I survived it.

I was working on an identity for a client and we where discussing paper for their stationery. I had made recommendations and the client called to ask me to email him a sample of the paper so he can feel it. After 2 minutes of arguing that I cannot email a physical sample, the client said “Ok, fine. If you can’t email it, then at least fax it to me.”.

Amsterdam was one of my favorite cities. Didn’t have a great first impression of it as I was staying right by the train station (read close to the red light district). It reminded me of being by 42nd Street/Port Authority area. Dirty, shady, filled with stupid tourists.

Moved to a quieter part of town after that and really learned to love this city. I loved how relaxed the pace was. I loved how beautiful the houses by the canals were. I loved riding around the city on a bicycle.

The afternoon I made this sketch, was a weekend and there were a lot of people boating up and down the canals. At least half those people would say Hi when the passed by.

Sometimes I recall very random moments from my Europe trip. It’s 3:30am in New York right now, I’m drinking another cup of coffee, working on - work. Suddenly recalling the helplessness I felt when I was in Athens, Greece. I was in Athens waiting for my flight to Vienna. My flight wasn’t till 10 something the next morning. I refused to pay for a few hours of sleep at a shitty hostel. So I hung out in a motel lobby in a shady part of town. I was tired, hungry, had no place to sleep, and a backpack full of dirty clothes.

I just remember how quiet it was.

Sadly, and maybe for the better, this is the only photo closest to that time that was taken. This photo was taken the next day at the airport while I was waiting to board the plane. I found it amusing that I felt i had “earned” my Nutella reward.
